Since our liver health is essential for the rest of the body to function perfectly, we must try to include in our diet foods that help us detoxify the liver in a natural way.

Purifying the liver is very important, because it is one of the most important organs in the human body. Its task, in fact, is to dispose of the residues of our organism and to produce a substance called bile.

Thanks to bile, the liver eliminates waste and breaks down fats from the  small intestine during digestion.
This organ processes, breaks down and balances everything that comes from the stomach and intestines. It also metabolizes the medicines we take so that the body can use them without causing toxic effects.

Here are other functions of the liver:

  • Transforming excess glucose into glycogen
  • Regulate blood amino acid levels
  • Metabolizing alcohol
  • Check for blood clotting
  • Purify bilirubin.

It is important to keep it healthy, because it performs fundamental functions for our health. Here’s how to do it thanks to detoxifying and purifying foods.

When should we cleanse the liver?

It is best to consume foods that cleanse your healthy liver on a regular basis  to avoid damage and problems.

However, always pay attention to the signals sent by an intoxicated liver:

  • Nausea after eating fatty foods
  • Abdominal pain
  • Constipation
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Bad breath, accompanied by white spots on the tongue.

If these problems occur consistently, try to include the following foods in your diet:

1. Garlic

Garlic is purifying and promotes liver health  thanks to its contribution of selenium, arginine, vitamin B6 and C.

  • Selenium helps in the detoxification process thanks to its antioxidants.
  • Arginine is an amino acid that promotes relaxation of blood vessels and helps preserve blood pressure in the liver within healthy limits.
  • Vitamin B6 is an anti-inflammatory, while vitamin C has an antioxidant effect on all cells (including liver cells).

2. Grapefruit 

  • Grapefruit is a citrus fruit rich in vitamin C.
  • The ideal would be to take one grapefruit a day. While if you choose to drink it squeezed, do not exceed the amount of one glass per day (200 ml).
  • If you don’t feel like taking it with water, you can add it to your green smoothies.

3. Vegetables

To cleanse the liver and keep it healthy, you need to eat a lot of vegetables, especially:

Rocket and spinach

Rocket and spinach increase the production of bile which purifies blood toxins. In this way it neutralizes the effects of heavy metals, pesticides and other chemicals found in some foods.

Beet

Thanks to its supply of antioxidants and soluble fibers, beetroot activates liver functions.

Broccoli and cauliflower

Broccoli as well as cauliflower help produce enzymes needed to eliminate toxins from the body.

4. Avocado

Avocado is rich in glutathione, one of the antioxidants that promote liver purification.   

It also provides:

  • Vitamin C, which helps in the process against cell oxidation. Consequently, it neutralizes free radicals and protects liver cells.
  • Vitamins E and K, which possess anti-inflammatory properties.

5. The walnuts

  • Walnuts contain omega 3 fatty acids, so they are detoxifying and purifying.

  • Due to the high caloric value, you shouldn’t eat more than 5 nuts a day.

6. Turmeric

Thanks to curcumin, turmeric is widely used as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. For this reason, it is ideal for our liver health.

In addition, it also helps in the detoxification and cell rejuvenation process, and ultimately contributes to the increase in bile production.

Purify the liver every 6 months

We should cleanse the liver at least twice a year. In this way we will guarantee its smooth functioning and, consequently, a good quality of life.

Also remember to avoid excessive intake of fried and processed foods . Finally, if the foods listed above are not part of your diet, try to include them gradually.
