Borax, otherwise known as sodium tetraborate, is a naturally occurring mineral that is used in the manufacture of cleaning products. Unlike other chemicals, it is not harmful to the environment and acts on various types of dirt.   

It is obtained from the evaporation of salt water lakes and is mainly used in America, Romania and Turkey. Although it is not toxic in small quantities, it  is recommended to handle it with gloves. 

In general, borax serves to:

  • Remove stains and dirt from clothes.

How to prepare this natural detergent at home?

To prepare this natural detergent based on borax and baking soda, we will also use other natural ingredients, such as mild soap and essential oil. The latter, chosen from lemon or lavender, will help us to give a wonderful scent to our product.

Ingredients

  • 2 bars of soap (500 g)
  • 1 cup of borax (200 g)
  • 2 cups of baking soda (400 g)
  • 20 drops of essential oil to taste
  • Water (to taste)

Tools

  • Grater
  • Pot
  • Latex gloves
  • Bucket
  • Wooden ladle
  • Old liquid detergent containers

Preparation

  • Grate the soap.
  • Pour the grated soap into a pot with water and bring it to a boil over low heat.
  • Stir with a wooden ladle, to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
  • Put on the gloves and add, separately, the borax to the baking soda.
  • Add the dissolved soap and water mix and mix thoroughly.
  • When the mixture is homogeneous, pour it into a bucket and add 7 liters of water.
  • Keep stirring and, to finish, add the essential oil.
  • Once you have obtained a homogeneous product, you can pour it into old containers of laundry detergents.
  • You can add a label indicating the product name.

How to use

  • Shake the product before using it and pour it into the special compartment of the washing machine.
  • Remember that you can also use it to clean some areas of the house: floors, kitchen, bathroom etc.

Making a natural detergent at home is easy and has many benefits. While buying a conventional product may be easier, this alternative is environmentally friendly and has no health side effects.
