Armpits May Indicate A Health Problem

The armpits can send us some signals to indicate that something is wrong with our health. Find out what problems they indicate.
The armpits can indicate a health problem

The armpits are an area that we take care of for aesthetic and hygiene reasons. Due to the high number of sweat glands present in them, they tend to release odors that are sometimes unpleasant. What we don’t know is that the armpits can indicate a health problem.

Although sometimes it goes unnoticed, many of the alterations they can present indicate that something is wrong with our body. In the following space we want to share with you 5 symptoms that you shouldn’t ignore.

1. The armpits and bad smell

It stinks in the armpits

Bad armpit odor is common in most people, and we have all experienced it at least once in our life. The accumulation of sweat on the skin surface  creates the ideal environment for bacteria to grow,  resulting in a strong, acidic odor.

It disappears easily after taking a shower and, of course, applying deodorant and antiperspirant products every day. However, when it is too strong and persistent, it can indicate a thyroid problem or hormonal imbalances, as stated in this study carried out by the La Paz University Hospital in Madrid (Spain).

If the smell resembles that of spoiled fruit or nail polish, it could be related to a problem known as ketoacidosis. This problem causes the body to reduce its ability to process sugars. Bad odor in the armpits despite proper hygiene can therefore be a symptom of diabetes or prediabetes.

2. The armpits and the itchy sensation

The itchy feeling in the armpits is common when hair begins to grow back after shaving. However, in general, it warns us about the health of the skin.

For example, it is a sign of irritated skin, perhaps due to the aggressive action of razors or the chemical components contained in some creams and deodorants.

Persistent itching, accompanied by red spots and dead skin cells, indicates the growth of fungi in this area of the body. In the latter case it is essential to consult your doctor, as antifungal treatment is necessary.

3. Pain

Pain in the armpits

Experiencing pain in the armpits can be the reaction of the muscles to excessive physical exertion of the arms.  It is common in people who lift too heavy objects or have lifted dumbbells while exercising at the gym.

This pain is sporadic and, in most cases, goes away with some rest. However, if it becomes a persistent problem, see a doctor. In limited cases, pain is a symptom of inflamed lymph nodules or lesions in this area.

To avoid the latter, don’t forget to integrate your training with stretching exercises, as this Spanish study also reiterates.

4. Skin rashes

The humid and warm environment of this area of the body increases the risk of suffering from yeast infections.

This combination promotes the growth of fungi and, as the days go by, can cause a mix of itching, redness and small rashes. These reactions can also be the result of an allergy (as this study from the University of Chile states), and excess heat or friction.

5. Bumps and inflammation of the armpits

Inflammation

Small pimple-like inflammations in the armpits appear when the follicles become clogged,  preventing hair from coming out to the surface.

Ingrown hairs can be painful and, if not treated properly, can lead to an infection. Instead of removing them with tweezers, exfoliate the area so that they come out on their own.

On the other hand, the formation of small, easily palpable bumps  indicates that the lymph nodes are inflamed. This condition indicates that the body is trying to fight off a disease or infection.

If this condition persists for days or weeks, it is an indication of infection or even a tumor, as this study by the University of Chile states.

Monitoring the condition of the lymph nodes and consulting the doctor is essential to understand the cause and severity of the problem.

How much attention do you pay to the signals sent by your armpits? Now that you know that they can warn us about some health problems, try to consult a specialist whenever you notice changes.
